- A" NOT FOR PROFIT"organization, to provide performing arts festivals for the purpose of educating and advancing the public's understanding and appreciation of performing arts and to educate artists through participation in such festivals and related workshops
- The Durham Region Music Society was formed by musicians who are concerned, not just about having a place to play, but by the state of live music in general. We're all surrounded by more music than ever before - it comes at us seemingly from every direction, whether we want it or not - yet so little of it is 'live.' As a result there's a whole generation out there that believes music comes from a computer, that all one need do is push a button and music magically appears. I don't have to tell anyone on this list that "roots" is 'marginal music.' There's simply not enough money involved to interest the major conglomerates that control what people hear. If real music, music with heart and soul, is to flourish at all, it has to be a grassroots thing. People have to get involved - otherwise, the music we love will be drowned out by that which is cheaper to make and reaches a broader demographic. In short, it'll become just another commodity, to be bought and sold by whatever means maximizes profit. Me, I love music far too much for that. But it has to come from an artist's soul, has to have that urgency that tells me it's as essential to the artist as eating and breathing. I can't get that from a computer. And no matter how good a recording, it just doesn't measure up to experiencing the magic and the mystery that is music unfold before my eyes. Music matters. And live music, the best kind, is in trouble. Clubs are closing at an alarming rate, and Canada's festival season is all too short. We need the support of people who care, people, like us, who believe the world will be a sad place indeed if the music is allowed to die through indifference.
